At last, two weeks ago we have finished the semester. I have 60 students for level 1, two students level 2 and 3 for level 3. I think I have completed this sem quite good, because I know my aims and I think my students too enjoy this course throughout their participation in class. For this semester I have embedded the techniques given by ARABICFORALL organization after undergoing their training for a week before the semester. One of its technique is : Speak Arabic during the whole class and not allowing any other than Arabic language. The students had to get used to the language through listening, and speaking. I've tried my best and as much as I could to make the students understand me while speaking Arabic. In my class, at the beginning, I noticed that they were afraid to speak, did not much understand, but they gave their attention to me. I try to do more activities than explaining words. Let them discover the meaning by themselves. They tried their best to act during their presentation and try to speak clearly. Insya Allah I will enclose the videos of the presentation next time.
I also have four dropouts in level 1. They are all male students. I do not know exactly why they cannot continue with all their friends. At first, I have one non-muslim taking level 1. Of course he cannot read and write at all. I teach early reading of alif ba ta during the first three weeks. But he is not present for the first two. Then I ask him to come to my office as I cannot deal with him only with the problem during the class because this will not be fair to others. When he came I ask him to read 'Qiraati"-first book. He read slowly with me. Then I asked him to come again maybe two or three times a week so he can catch up with others. He took my qiraati book so he could learn at home and never turn out after that. He did return it to me after the sem ended a week ago... He said to me Arabic is difficult to learn! In my opinion, Arabic is easy to anyone who wants it, but hard to the other who doesn't have the will and motivation. Maybe he is unmotivated though he is quite interested in it.
The other dropouts are always so quiet in the class. As they are the only male students I always ask them to make them speak and join the group. They always shy out except for Khairul who did have Arabic basics during school time. After week 7, I started to collect their pictionary dictionary projects. Poor Khairul had to do it by himself as his group fail to discuss and collaborate. After week 7, they had to prepare for the presentation in front the class. And from first week Ramadhan started, I never see them again. I sent three warning letters for them to come to class or at least meet me to give reasons, but they never heed until now. I am quite sad with such students and hope they do not repeat this with other subjects. Arabic language is only an audit subject for these students and did not give priority to it. But for Khairul I do get some information from his female friends that he actually is not motivated to go to class as he was often lonely in the class without a male friend to discuss and for the activities and for the reason, he shied away. Let's hope such cases do not happen again to me next time.
After taking a look of the first registeration for the next semester, I am very surprised that there are no students for level 2 next sem. Why? Where have all my 60 students of last semester gone? Why are they not interested of taking level 2? Comparing to other languages such as Japanese, French, etc almost all or half of them will take level 2 and continue to level 3. Before with Ust. Khairul Azman there were 2 groups with more than 20 students. But when I started taking over him when he left for PhD starting this sem, there are only two students; then one dropped as he did not apply to the pbm regulation by taking two courses of level 1 &2 at the same time. So only Saidi stayed until the end. He is very much motivated to learn Arabic and he already registered level 3 for the next sem. He had done cultural reseach on Arabic food and also presented it in front of level 1 students with much courage alone by himself. ( I also have his powerpoint which I will enclose here next time). But really I don't know what are my students perspectives of Arabic or of my teaching as they do not give feedbacks to me directly.
For Level 3, I have 3 eager students with me this sem. They are really joyful and enthusiastic to learn as much as they can before leaving the university as this is their ending sem before going for practical. They will sit for their final exam this Thursday, and I hope they will excell as they already have good results with their interview project and presentation ( will exclose their video here if I have time).
